How real-world experience, human-centered design, and thoughtful engineering inspired a new generation of commercial pet waste stations.

Every successful product has an origin story. Some begin with a breakthrough in technology. Others emerge from extensive market research, customer surveys, or brainstorming sessions inside conference rooms. PooStation had a much more ordinary beginning. It started during routine walks with my dog while using the same commercial pet waste stations found in apartment communities, homeowner associations, parks, municipalities, and public spaces across the country.

Like millions of pet owners, I cleaned up after my dog every day. Unlike most people, however, I approached those stations from the perspective of a wheelchair user. That difference changed everything. Tasks that many people barely noticed—reaching for a receptacle, lifting a lid after handling pet waste, balancing while holding a leash, or maneuvering around the station—became impossible to ignore. I wasn’t searching for a business opportunity, and I certainly wasn’t trying to reinvent an industry. I simply found myself asking one question over and over again: Could this experience be better?

That single question became the foundation of PooStation.

For many years, the basic concept of the commercial pet waste station has remained remarkably consistent. Manufacturers have introduced new finishes, different materials, and cosmetic variations, but the overall experience of using, maintaining, and servicing these stations has changed only incrementally. Meanwhile, the communities they serve have evolved dramatically. Today’s luxury apartment communities, master-planned developments, HOA neighborhoods, municipal parks, senior living campuses, and mixed-use properties place far greater emphasis on aesthetics, accessibility, sustainability, safety, and long-term maintenance than ever before. Residents expect more from the amenities around them. Property managers expect equipment that reflects the quality of their communities. Maintenance teams are expected to accomplish more with fewer resources.

That contrast raised an important question. If our communities have evolved, shouldn’t the equipment that serves them evolve as well?

From the beginning, PooStation was never intended to become just another commercial pet waste station with a different appearance or a longer list of advertised features. The objective was far more ambitious. We wanted to rethink the entire ownership experience by examining every interaction between the station and the people who depend on it every day. Residents, maintenance professionals, property managers, HOA boards, municipalities, and parks all interact with these stations differently, yet they all rely on the same equipment to perform consistently. Every engineering decision therefore began with a simple principle: solve meaningful problems before adding new features.

Throughout development, I often reflected on a philosophy that Steve Jobs famously repeated from Pablo Picasso: “Good artists copy. Great artists steal.” Walter Isaacson discusses this philosophy in his biography Steve Jobs, explaining that Jobs believed true innovation comes from understanding why great ideas succeed and then transforming those ideas into something better. That perspective became one of the guiding principles behind PooStation. Every commercial pet waste station on the market had something valuable to teach us. Some ideas had proven themselves over many years and deserved to remain. Others revealed opportunities for improvement. The challenge wasn’t to reinvent everything. The challenge was knowing what to preserve, what to refine, and what to leave behind.

The design process began not with engineering drawings but with observation. Rather than asking what another dog waste station should look like, I began asking how people actually interacted with them. Residents approached the station differently than maintenance professionals. Parents pushing strollers experienced them differently than dog owners walking multiple pets. Older adults had different needs than younger residents. Property managers evaluated them differently than maintenance teams responsible for servicing them. My own perspective as a wheelchair user simply highlighted frustrations that had existed all along but often went unnoticed. Every observation became another opportunity to improve the overall experience.

One of the earliest priorities became sanitation. Public health organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), encourage minimizing unnecessary contact with contaminated surfaces whenever practical while emphasizing proper hand hygiene after handling pet waste. Those recommendations reinforced something that had already become obvious through everyday use. After picking up pet waste, many commercial pet waste stations require residents to lift or touch the receptacle lid before disposing of the waste bag. While no product eliminates the need for proper handwashing, thoughtful engineering can reduce unnecessary contact points wherever practical.

That philosophy influenced numerous aspects of PooStation’s design. The waste receptacle incorporates a full integrated handle that provides a comfortable, natural grip rather than requiring users to lift the lid from a narrow edge or lip. More importantly, the newest production model includes a redesigned overlapping perimeter that extends approximately one-half inch around the receptacle. This refinement creates a cleaner, more enclosed container that helps reduce rain intrusion, minimizes wind-blown debris, and allows the lid to seat more securely when closed. Most residents may never consciously notice those details, but thoughtful engineering often works quietly in the background, improving the experience without calling attention to itself.

Accessibility became another defining principle. Because I regularly used these stations from a wheelchair, I quickly realized that a single method of operation would never serve every user equally well. Rather than forcing everyone to interact with the station the same way, PooStation was designed with both a hand-operated lever and a foot pedal. The hand lever provides an accessible solution for individuals who may find it easier to operate from a seated position, while the foot pedal offers a convenient hands-free alternative for standing users and maintenance professionals. What began as a solution inspired by accessibility ultimately became an improvement that benefits nearly everyone.

Maintenance received equal attention throughout the design process. Residents typically spend less than a minute using a pet waste station, yet maintenance professionals may service the same station hundreds of times each year. Small inefficiencies repeated over months and years eventually become significant. Every unnecessary movement, every additional step, and every awkward interaction accumulates into measurable time and effort. That realization inspired several engineering decisions, including the dual-opening system that allows maintenance personnel to keep both hands available while changing oversized biodegradable liners, the self-locking access compartment that automatically secures when closed, and the external EMPTY indicator that immediately identifies when the pet waste bag dispenser requires refilling. Individually, these refinements may appear modest. Collectively, they simplify a maintenance process repeated thousands of times throughout the product’s life.

Reliability became another guiding objective. During development, one question continually resurfaced: What happens when maintenance can’t get there today? Holiday weekends, severe weather, staffing shortages, and competing priorities do not stop residents from walking their dogs. Empty dispensers create frustration for pet owners and additional work for property managers. For that reason, PooStation was engineered to hold approximately 1,200 oversized biodegradable pet waste bags, providing roughly two to three times the capacity of many commercial pet waste stations currently available. Increasing storage capacity while simultaneously using larger, easier-to-grip pet waste bags required considerable engineering and packaging considerations, but the objective remained simple: reduce the likelihood of empty dispensers while improving the experience every time a resident reaches for a bag.

Sustainability was never treated as an afterthought or a marketing slogan. It became one of the product’s design criteria from the earliest stages of development. The oversized pet waste bags were developed using biodegradable materials, and the oversized maintenance liners were designed with the same philosophy. Rather than viewing the station, the bags, and the liners as separate products, they were engineered as one complete pet waste management system because environmental responsibility should extend beyond the steel structure to every component supporting its daily operation.

Safety also became an important consideration. Dog owners rarely limit their walks to perfect daylight conditions. Early mornings, late evenings, shorter winter afternoons, and poorly illuminated walking paths are part of everyday life in communities across the country. That reality inspired the addition of a motion-activated LED light that automatically illuminates the station whenever someone approaches. Its purpose was never simply to add another feature. It was to improve visibility, convenience, and confidence whenever natural lighting is limited.

Perhaps the greatest lesson learned throughout development was that good engineering rarely follows a straight path. The first sketches evolved into prototypes. The prototypes evolved into production samples. The production samples evolved into opportunities for further refinement. Even after our production sample arrived, we continued making meaningful changes because seeing and handling the finished product revealed opportunities that could never have been fully appreciated on paper.

One of the most significant examples involved the waste receptacle itself. Rather than accepting the original production design, we substantially redesigned and reengineered the receptacle to create a sturdier, more durable commercial product. That decision affected material selection, structural reinforcement, manufacturing methods, component compatibility, shipping logistics, installation requirements, and overall weight. Improving one component often required changing another. Increasing strength could increase weight. Increasing weight could affect freight costs and handling. Solving one engineering challenge frequently revealed another.

There were moments throughout development when the easier path would have been to declare the product finished and move forward. Instead, every obstacle became another opportunity to ask a familiar question: Can we make it better? That willingness to continue refining the product, even after production samples had been manufactured, ultimately became one of PooStation’s defining characteristics.

Product development is always an exercise in balancing priorities. Better materials often increase costs. Stronger construction can increase weight. Additional features frequently add manufacturing complexity. Throughout the development of PooStation, every engineering decision required balancing durability, appearance, logistics, sustainability, usability, manufacturing efficiency, and price. Some compromises were unavoidable. Others were not.

Certain principles became our red lines in the sand. We would not compromise on sanitation. We would not compromise on accessibility. We would not compromise on maintenance efficiency. We would not compromise on sustainability. Most importantly, we would not compromise on designing a commercial pet waste station around the people who actually use and maintain it every day. Every other decision had to work around those principles—not replace them.

Looking back, I realize PooStation was never really about designing another commercial pet waste station. It was about respecting the everyday experiences of the people who depend on one. Every handle, every pedal, every latch, every biodegradable pet waste bag, every biodegradable liner, every motion-activated LED light, every structural reinforcement, every increase in bag capacity, and every refinement exists because it solves a problem that was either personally experienced or repeatedly observed throughout the design process.

The finished product represents far more than steel, hardware, and components. It reflects years of observation, countless revisions, difficult engineering decisions, manufacturing trade-offs, and a willingness to continue improving long after many products would have been considered complete.

Innovation is often associated with breakthrough technology, but my experience has taught me something different. Sometimes innovation begins by paying closer attention to everyday frustrations that everyone else has simply learned to accept. When thoughtful observation is combined with disciplined engineering and a commitment to continual refinement, even the most familiar products can be reimagined.

That is the story behind PooStation.
